Hybrid Corn Pioneer Expo in Earling Aug. 22 & 23 EARLING – The Hybrid Corn Pioneers Museum, 2040 Ironwood Road, is having its bi-annual Open House and Corn Expo here on Sat., August 22 and 23. The two-day show features rare wooden corn planters, corn shellers, all types of corn related machinery and items from the 1840s to the 1950s. It features • Working corn machinery exhibits • 2012 National corn husking champions picking corn by hand throughout the day. • View one-of-a kind” three century corn plot. Features open pollinated corn of the 1800s; first hybrid corn of the 1900s and triple stack corn of today. See first hand the advancements in seed technology. • Planting demonstrations. • See a blacksmith in action. • Tractors rides on Saturday. Hybrid Corn Pioneer Expo in Earling this weekend, Gov. Branstad to attend EARLING – Iowa Governor Terry Branstad will be a featured guest this Saturday, August 25 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Hybrid Corn Pioneers Museum bi-annual Open House and Corn Expo. The event runs Sat., August 24 and Sun., August 25 and is open to the public from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at 2040 Ironwood Rd., Earling. Admission to the Expo is a free will donation with all proceeds to Ovarian Cancer Research. Food, refreshments and homemade ice cream will be served both days. Show features The two-day open house features rare wooden corn planters, corn shellers, all types of corn related machinery and items from the 1840s to the 1950s. Tribute to Shelby County The event is a tribute to Shelby County as the cornerstone of today’s hybrid corn. “In 1992, Time magazine listed mankind’s greatest feats for the last 1,000 years and number three on the list was hybrid corn -- it revolutionized agriculture and feeding the world,” museum owner Steve Kenkel said. “And Shelby County was the leader in that revolution from the late 1920s thru the 1950’s -- Shelby County produced more seed corn companies/producers than any other county in Iowa and quite possibly the U.
